6 February 2026
Today we join the NHS and global health partners in raising awareness of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) β a harmful practice with no medical benefit and a serious violation of human rights.
FGM involves procedures that deliberately alter or injure the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It can cause severe pain, infection, long-term physical and mental health problems, and complications with sexual and reproductive health. In the UK, FGM is illegal.
Getting help and support
All women and girls have the right to control what happens to their bodies and the right to say no to FGM. Help and support are available:
β’ If someone is in immediate danger, call the police on 999
β’ If youβre worried that someone may be at risk, contact the NSPCC FGM Helpline on 0800 028 3550 or email fgmhelp@nspcc.org.uk
β’ If youβre under pressure to have FGM carried out on your daughter, speak to a GP, health visitor or another healthcare professional, or contact the NSPCC for confidential advice
β’ If you have experienced FGM, you can access specialist NHS gynaecology and FGM services β ask your GP, midwife or healthcare professional about support in your area
Why this matters
Globally, more than 230 million girls and women are living with the consequences of FGM, and millions more remain at risk. Today is a reminder that ending FGM requires awareness, safeguarding and community action.
At CMK Medical Centre, we are committed to supporting patients with care, confidentiality and respect.
There is no tolerance for FGM β today or ever.
